As Summer approaches, say hello to your new favorite drink- the perfect margarita. Excellent for sipping in the sunshine, or at the end of a warm summer day. Preferably with tacos.
The margarita was invented in Baja Mexico sometime between 1938 and 1942. It’s salty, sweet, sour, and tangy. Margaritas can get a bad rap because of some store-bought mixers that are overly sweet but a well-made margarita is tart and refreshing, and nothing can replace that lime and tequila combination.
How to Make a Margarita
Its simple! Tequila (I like a blanco tequila), some orange liqueur, lime juice from freshly squeezed limes, and agave to sweeten. Oh, and salt on the rim if you’d like! Simply add all ingredients (except the salt) to a cocktail shaker, or even just a measuring glass and mix with a spoon! Garnish your glass with salt if you’d like, and pour margarita over ice. If you’re wondering what type of salt to use, I found this interesting, and in the end went with a course sea salt I already had on hand.
Why no Margarita Mix?
Margarita mix is often filled with sugar, its overly sweet and not only gives you a headache but a stomach ache as well. Freshly squeezing some limes requires minimal effort and sweetening with agave is a much better sweetener.
Why Salt the Rim?
Salting the rim of a margarita is practically standard. The salt enhances the flavor of the margarita (as salt does) and also helps to counteract any bitterness from the orange liqueur.
This margarita is light, refreshing, and perfect for summer. Give it a try and let me know what you think!
